Run girl, run!
Will she fit trough the gate with all of her luggage? mmh...
oh.. another person holding up the gates…
Oh he is old, he probably doesn’t understand.
Nice another one that’s holding up the gates..
Wouldn’t he have enough money on his card?
The movement of these people is restricted by certain systems like these gates.
Do we move the way we want to?
Or do we move the way we have to?
We’re restricted in our movements.
How would it be if we could move freely?
What would we do different?
Are these systems we move in really as inclusive as they say they are?
But...what if we CAN'T move the way we are being expected to?
We chose the gesture ‘Forcing doors’. A lot of people force doors when they are too late for the train and still want to get in when they are closing.
The doors restrict our movement and exclude us when we are too late.
A lot of people can change their punctuality which means the doors wil include them next time.
But what if you can’t speed up due to a disability?
Will you always be excluded?
Our human bodies wanted to experience how it would feel to be an object that excludes people, so we became the doors.
By becoming the object we experienced that there is no nuance and empathy in a lot of social systems.
What if we replace the automatic systems in society for humans; would this system be different if more human interaction was involved?
We came up with a new system. We wanted to make it as short sighted as the systems are today to show where and for whom the systems are lacking.
We designed a system to use as a social experiment;
What happens when you design the stations for people that have certain disabilities?
Will they feel like they are included, that people thought of them when designing the station?
What will happen with the people that always had the ability to see, hear, speak and walk, when they all of a sudden can’t keep up with the design of a public space?
Closing doors became our metaphor for being excluded from a society/system. More doors should be forced to open up.
